Architect

Architecture is the design of the entire building structure. This means the exterior as well as the interior elements.

Architects are professionally trained through education and experience. They are licensed to work in the applicable province. They are accountable and have professional liability insurance.

They design both private and public buildings.

Their designs are creative and functional while meeting health, safety and environment standards. These are the standards established by the provincial codes. The building code, the fire code, barrier free design for the handicapped, and so on.

The design process includes the visual elements (color, natural and artificial lighting, texture, shape) as well as the best use of space. Energy and acoustic efficiency of a building are also considered in the design.

They are knowledgeable about building construction and construction materials. Other specialists in the building industry, such as lighting or building material consultants, keep them current and well informed.

Specializing in a field is common. Some will specialize in areas of commercial building design. Others specialize in residential design.

They produce construction drawings and specifications once their client has agreed upon a design and plan. An electrical, mechanical or structural engineer is hired, as required, to complete the construction drawing documents.

Other services are often offered to the client. Project management, permit applications, land survey and soil assessments are some examples.
