Building Codes

Building codes are minimum building standards established for the construction industry.

This ensures that all design and construction is structurally sound, safe from fire and does not pose any health hazards.

The National Codes of Canada are model codes.

Provincial Codes are national codes that have been adapted as they are or modified to suit local needs. Provincial codes are law. They are enforced.

These codes must be followed for new building construction, renovation or alteration to an existing building. This applies to both residential and commercial construction.

Interior designers, architects, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineers…all design and specify to comply with the codes. General contractors and sub-trades such as an electrical or plumbing contractors must build according to the codes.

Any individual who does his own building, electrical or plumbing work must also follow the codes.

This is why a building permit is often required. The building department checks drawings and applications to ensure code standards are met. Again, this is for the health and safety of all who will be occupying any building structure, long term or short. For example…a house, a retail store or a restaurant.
