Local refers to the city, town or municipality that governs an area.
The building departments in cities, towns and municipalities review the plans (drawings) for any type of construction, which takes place in its district. Once the building department approves the submitted plans, the building departments issue the building permit, electrical permit, sign permits, etc., which is required to begin construction. Building departments also have building inspectors to ensure the proper permits are posted and all work conforms to code and the approved plans. Building departments oversee both residential and commercial projects.
