Local Building Departments

Local building department refers to a government office, which has jurisdiction over a district within each province. The district is either a city, town or municipality. The building department has the authority to oversee all construction work, which requires a building permit.

The officials can answer construction questions according to provincial code regulations. They approve permit applications and drawings to ensure all proposed work complies with the codes and district by-laws. Once a submission is approved, a permit is issued for the project.

Building department inspectors check both residential and commercial job sites. This is to ensure all work is according to code standards. This is also to ensure that any permits required for the work have been issued.

Before starting any construction project, find out if any permits are required for the type of work involved. This applies to both residential and commercial construction, whether it is new fencing, demolition, new construction, electrical, and so on.
